    More About The Kingsway

    Kingsway Park is situated on former Clergy Reserve lands that were deeded to the Church of England during the early 1800s. The church began leasing the property to farmers until just after 1900 when the land was acquired by Robert Home Smith who dreamed up and planned out what is now The Kingsway neighbourhood.

    Home Smith and his crew began marketing and subdividing the land in 1912, however sales of homes and land were stalled by the outbreak of World War I. However, in 1924 the Bloor Street bridge was built, connecting The Kingsway to the rest of the city and the are began to grow in popularity into the desirable neighbourhood it is today. Many of the first residents of Kingsway were Northern Ontario mining executives and Toronto businessmen who were personally acquainted with Robert Home Smith and who encouraged him to purchase the land. Home Smith’s motto for The Kingsway was “a little bit of England far from England”. His ideal was to establish an English style garden suburb of he highest integrity and beauty within Toronto, and this legacy established by Robert Home Smith endures today as one of Toronto’s finest neighbourhoods.

    The houses in this area were all built between 1924 and 1947 and include some of the best and finest examples of Old English classical and vernacular architecture in Toronto. These houses often feature attractive and timeless stone exteriors, intricate tapestry brick patterns and elaborate stucco and held timbering designs. These homes also feature sturdy and authentic wood oak doors, leaded glass windows, fanciful bay and oriel windows and decorative wrought iron railing and porch lamps. The oldest homes in the neighbourhood are located along Government Road near Dundas Street. Here you will find astonishing examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture built in the later half of the 1800s and early 1900s. Mixed in with these exquisite older homes are contemporary bungalows designed in the 1940s and 1950s.

    Although there are numerous shopping, educational and recreational opportunities within Kingsway neighbourhood, access to the downtown area can be utilized easily and by four from the Royal York or Islington subway stations located on Bloor Street. Both of these stations are part of the Bloor-Danforth subway line. The Islington station also connects to the Mississauga Transit system as well as provide an express bus service to the Pearson International airport for all of your traveling needs. If you are traveling in car or other motorized vehicle, the commute to downtown Toronto is approximately twenty minutes.
