Kingsway Real Estate & The Neighbourhood

Kingsway is a premier neighbourhood in Toronto’s west end and is located in the former City of Etobicoke, an area that became the west end of Toronto upon amalgamation in 1998. . Known for its idyllic setting, nestled in the forest of the Humber River Valley, this well-end community was designed for families! Bounded by Bloor Street to the south, Dundas street to the north, the Mimico Creek to the west and Humber River to the east, the houses and properties are all well sized and attractive, all the streets are pedestrian friendly, and all the schools, shopping, churches and recreational areas are within walking distance from your front door. The streets are lined with majestic oak and maple trees that provide the perfect backdrop for the stately homes that grace this neighbourhood and create the ideal atmosphere to raise children or to come home to after the work day is through.

Now, the lifestyle in Kingsway is something to be desired. Alongside its beautiful homes, the shopping district on Bloor Street West has an excellent combination of specialty shops, chain stores, restaurants, professional services and medical services. The shopping centre is aesthetically an extension from the residential neighbourhood, with park benches placed along the route and the use of black-painted cast-iron street lamps. The Dundas Street West at the north end of the Kingsway is less dressed up, however the connivence of the shopping located in strip malls makes up for the lack of aesthetic in convenience, and also feature a number of finishing and design stores, landscaping shops, hobby and craft stores, antique stores and even an art gallery. Alongside the vast shopping and convenience stores in Kingsway are numerous recreational opportunities. Including the Brentwood Public Library offering a variety of children and adult programming, the Kingsway movie theatre screens kid ad new films and is perfect for a rainy summer day or for escaping the winter cold. The Etobicoke Memorial Pool and Health Club offered a myriad of aerobic and aqua fit programs for adults. Next door to the pool and health club is the central arena which offers public skating as well as organized ice and ball hockey leagues for both children and adults. The Etobicoke Lawn Bowling Club located in Central Park off of Islington south of Dundas that includes two bowling greens, as well as tennis courts and a large baseball diamond. Home Smith Park which is accessed off Dundas Street and follows alongside the Humber River is part of a ten-kilometre paved trail that links cyclists, inline skaters, walkers, joggers and runners to the Martin Goodman Trail on Toronto’s waterfront.

With its distance from the downtown core, beautiful homes and convenient living, The Kingsway is an idyllic place to call home, to raise a family and to create your own community. If you are looking for a place to call home within Toronto that feels like you are vacationing in England, look no further! These beautiful homes and convenient shopping, well renown schools and recreational activities for both adults and children surrounded by noble and enchanting oak trees and street lights makes this a beautiful neighbourhood to call home.

    More About The Kingsway

Kingsway Park is situated on former Clergy Reserve lands that were deeded to the Church of England during the early 1800s. The church began leasing the property to farmers until just after 1900 when the land was acquired by Robert Home Smith who dreamed up and planned out what is now The Kingsway neighbourhood.

Home Smith and his crew began marketing and subdividing the land in 1912, however sales of homes and land were stalled by the outbreak of World War I. However, in 1924 the Bloor Street bridge was built, connecting The Kingsway to the rest of the city and the are began to grow in popularity into the desirable neighbourhood it is today. Many of the first residents of Kingsway were Northern Ontario mining executives and Toronto businessmen who were personally acquainted with Robert Home Smith and who encouraged him to purchase the land. Home Smith’s motto for The Kingsway was “a little bit of England far from England”. His ideal was to establish an English style garden suburb of he highest integrity and beauty within Toronto, and this legacy established by Robert Home Smith endures today as one of Toronto’s finest neighbourhoods.

The houses in this area were all built between 1924 and 1947 and include some of the best and finest examples of Old English classical and vernacular architecture in Toronto. These houses often feature attractive and timeless stone exteriors, intricate tapestry brick patterns and elaborate stucco and held timbering designs. These homes also feature sturdy and authentic wood oak doors, leaded glass windows, fanciful bay and oriel windows and decorative wrought iron railing and porch lamps. The oldest homes in the neighbourhood are located along Government Road near Dundas Street. Here you will find astonishing examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture built in the later half of the 1800s and early 1900s. Mixed in with these exquisite older homes are contemporary bungalows designed in the 1940s and 1950s.

Although there are numerous shopping, educational and recreational opportunities within Kingsway neighbourhood, access to the downtown area can be utilized easily and by four from the Royal York or Islington subway stations located on Bloor Street. Both of these stations are part of the Bloor-Danforth subway line. The Islington station also connects to the Mississauga Transit system as well as provide an express bus service to the Pearson International airport for all of your traveling needs. If you are traveling in car or other motorized vehicle, the commute to downtown Toronto is approximately twenty minutes.
